Opera in four acts on a libretto by Salvadore Cammarano, based on the play El trovador by Antonio García Gutiérrez
After a series of dramatic works based on patriotic subjects or taken from English, French and German romantic literature, Giuseppe Verdi approached the writings of his Spanish contemporary Antonio García Gutiérrez and the drama El trovador, revealing one of the masterpieces included in the famous "popular trilogy".
The action of the opera Il Trovatore takes place in 15th-century Spain and centers on Count Alvaro de Luna, Manrico and Countess Leonora, with whom both men are in love. The plot of the story is not limited to the jealousy that Count de Luna feels towards his rival, the troubadour Manrico, whom Leonora, in turn, loves. The disappearance many years ago of the count's brother - Garcia - kidnapped and killed, apparently, by an old witch, still has its echoes in the present: while the count seeks to avenge his brother, the gypsy Azucena - the daughter of the witch burned at the stake and Manrico's mother - seeks to punish the de Luna family severely.
The show has three intermissions and ends around 10:00 PM
